Sumba
Sumba is an enigmatic island in eastern Indonesia, where ancient traditions and a deeply rooted spiritual culture persist in a landscape untouched by modernity. Unlike the more popular islands of the archipelago, Sumba is arid and remote, with rolling hills, sacred megalithic villages, and white sandy beaches. The island's people live in harmony with their ancestral beliefs, particularly the marapu cult, which venerates spirits and views life on earth as a temporary passage. Funeral rites, intricate ikat weaving, unique village architecture, and the presence of wild horses—symbols of freedom and strength—reflect the enduring connection between the Sumbanese and their spiritual heritage. This photographic work captures the essence of Sumba—a place where time stands still, and every element of life is infused with a profound sense of tradition and reverence for the past.
